Methodology. Ethnography is a research strategy where the approach is to get as much information as possible about a particular culture. The ethnographer, or cultural anthropologist, tries to get information from many angles to see whole picture--again, striving for that holistic view. There are multiple methodologies that can be employed: Canada's first Department of Anthropology was founded at the same university in 1936. In the late 1800s, as anthropology grew in popu- larity throughout Europe and North America, many early anthropologists, such as Tylor, engaged in what contemporary anthropologists like to call armchair anthropology.FINDING THE FIELD. My first experience with fieldwork as a student anthropologist took place in a small indigenous community in northeastern Brazil studying the Jenipapo-Kanindé of Lagoa Encantada (Enchanted Lake). I had planned to conduct an independent research project on land tenure among members of the indigenous tribe and had gotten permission to spend several months with the community.Sociocultural anthropology draws together the principal axes of cultural anthropology and social anthropology. Cultural anthropology is the comparative study of the manifold ways in which people make sense of the world around them, while social anthropology is the study of the relationships among individuals and groups.
